Cairo: clashes with the police and demonstrators in Tahrir Square in Cairo erupted in a third straight day Monday night after the deadly violence that has left at least 13 deaths.

Police used tear gas sporadically throughout the night and early Monday against hundreds of demonstrators - in scattered groups around Tahrir - who responded with stones and rocks, according to images live on state television.

Sunday, police and military forces used batons, tear gas and rubber bullets to clear the centrality of thousands of protesters demanding the production dominant military power to civilian rule.

Morgue officials said 13 people were killed Sunday and two on Saturday, sparking fears of disruption of the November 28 elections, the first since a popular uprising overthrew Hosni Mubarak in February.

The protesters fear that the army intends to maintain a degree of power through a set of constitutional principles above, it intends to apply to the next legislature, which drafted the statutes of the country.

Events in Tahrir Square is running after the violent anti-military rally on Friday, which called on the army to relinquish power to civilian rule and return to barracks.

The demonstrators were particularly vehement against Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Minister of Defence of Mubarak long ago, now leader of the decision of the Supreme Council of the armed forces. (AFP)
